SAN BERNARDINO, CALIFORNIA — NOVEMBER 5, 2026. San Bernardino County will continue behavioral health services for children and adults with significant needs after the Board of Supervisors approved approximately $10.5 million in federal Community Mental Health Services Block Grant funding. The funding, administered through the California Department of Health Care Services, runs through June 2028.
Who is expected to be served?
The county estimates the grant will support services each year for approximately 400 young people at risk of institutionalization, hospitalization or long-term incarceration, through coordination with the Probation Department. It also anticipates services for about 1,000 adults at risk of hospitalization or institutionalization and about 100 adults with both a behavioral health condition and substance use disorder.
Continuing services, not a newly opened facility
This is continuation funding for existing programs. San Bernardino County says it has received this block grant since 1982, and no local funding match is required. The vote should not be interpreted as an announcement that a new hospital, treatment center or 1,500 additional beds are opening. The county’s estimated populations concern services, not beds or guaranteed individual enrollments.
Questions worth following
For a geographically large county, local access, wait times and partnerships with schools and community providers are major questions. Public reporting should examine where care is delivered and how the county assesses outcomes. Residents seeking services should contact the Behavioral Health Department through its official service directory rather than relying on a funding headline as an enrollment notice.
